Experience over a thousand years of British history at Dover Castle, Kent – the castle of castles. (Please note: Dover Castle can also be incorporated into one of our Tailor-Made Tours of South East England.)
From the Romans, through to the medieval and Tudor eras, Kings and Queens understood the importance of securing this gateway to Britain.
The castle we recognise today took shape in the 12th-century under Henry II, who was driven to develop it by two motivations: To leave a legacy that guaranteed England’s lasting prominence in Europe and as a part of his penance for the infamous slaughter of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, which took place at Canterbury Cathedral. Here at Dover Castle, you’ll even find a Royal Chapel within the castle’s keep dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket. And if this historic association with Canterbury has piqued your interest, you might also be interested in the private medieval tour of Canterbury.
Prime Ministers such as William Pitt ‘The Younger’ and, famously, Sir Winston Churchill, also enhanced Dover Castle’s fortifications, during the Napoleonic Wars and World War 2 respectively, so that it could continue to stand firm in defending the nation.
Beyond its reputation as a stronghold, there’s a subtle mystique about Dover Castle; as you explore inside, you can’t help but be impressed by the continued innovation during the castle’s expansion and the evolution and renewal of its fortifications over the centuries.
Expertly managed by English Heritage today, the castle provides visitors with a cleverly curated insight into life in medieval times, while also reminding visitors that its strategic role was hugely significant for many centuries thereafter.
Hear the stories from a local guide as you walk in the footsteps of great (and sometimes notorious!) English leaders and knights whilst taking in the splendour and incredible views of Dover and The English Channel.
This private tour may be upgraded to include Canterbury, another castle, or alternative historic location in Kent. Please reach out if you’d like to know more. And if you’d like even more options, browse the full range of private tours in South East England!
