Rochester Castle, still one of the best-preserved and tallest medieval structures in England, is a 12th-century ruin with a stone tower also known as a keep.

Overlooking the River Medway, Kent, it has helped defend South East England’s coast for centuries, including enduring various sieges.

In fact, its strategic location was identified by the Romans over 1500 years ago. The Normans were quick to build on the site when they landed in England during the 11th century.

This area of North West Kent is not just about a castle and its fortifications.

In the 1800’s, the historic town of Rochester was the home of Charles Dickens and now forms part of a residential and industrial area known as the Medway Towns. It was Rochester that inspired many of Dickens’ literary works and visitors can today get a glimpse of the Dickensian way of life too!

There’s Rochester Cathedral which is the seat of the Bishop of Rochester, dating as far back as the early 7th century, and is the second oldest bishopric in England – and only after the Archbishop of Canterbury.

This is an opportunity to add something quite unique to your trip to England may be visited as a day tour on its own or as part of a visit to another historical location in Kent.
